Carryover
The ability to transfer unused leave from one year to the next.
Definition
Carryover allows employees to move unused PTO or leave from one calendar or anniversary year into the next. Policies vary widely - some allow unlimited carryover, others cap the amount that can be carried over, and some have "use-it-or-lose-it" provisions (where permitted by law). Carryover policies must comply with state laws.
Examples
- • A policy allowing up to 40 hours of carryover per year
- • State sick leave requiring carryover of accrued but unused time
